Becoming a full-fledged member—a process highly encouraged, and sometimes thunderously demanded, in Pastor Mark Driscoll’s sermons—requires months of classes and a careful study of Doctrine: What Christians Should Believe , Driscoll’s page Mars Hill textbook. To seal the deal, the prospective member must formally agree to submit to the “authority” of the Mars Hill leadership. Driscoll, the church’s cofounder and public face, has made a name for himself with his strutting, macho interpretation of Christianity, one in which men are unquestioned heads of their households and “chick-ified church boys,” as he calls them, need not apply. He rails against mainstream Christians who imagine a “Richard Simmons, hippie, queer Christ Lance, a soft-spoken ex-military guy whose real name is not Lance, started attending Mars Hill Church in early , became a full member before the year was out, and by October of was deeply and happily immersed in the life of the church. It is interesting that there were a few colored members added during the early years. You may recall that we used this situation as a basis for discussion last year, and then decided to leave further discussion to others who were better informed. Make sure you read this carefully. WTH has some extremely important things to say, not just about Mars Hill and their shortcomings, but also about the biases and failures of the Christian blogosphere and other Mars Hill critics.
I thank him for his wise and balanced approach. In early Mars Hill Church in Seattle made headlines over the disciplinary procedures made in the case of former church member Andrew Lamb. The subsequent controversy that erupted made enough news to get covered in Seattle by local newspaper The Stranger , by a number of bloggers, and by Slate. Where the first question is concerned Andrew Lamb identified himself publicly earlier this year. More than sufficient information was available on the internet to identify the names of other parties involved on the basis of social and broadcast media content that was available even before Andrew became a subject of Mars Hill Church discipline.
The problem with doing that was that in early Mars Hill had embarked on a massive information purge that removed basic information about Mars Hill staff and families from all publicly viewable websites. Mars Hill critics, for their part, seemed far more obsessed with finding ways to tie everything back to Mark Driscoll. Critics supposed that Driscoll had to be the subject of discussion as often as not.
Mars Hill history of posting notices to church members about member and leadership changes would take more time than is suitable to discuss here. That subject, too, is a matter you can read about at Wenatchee The Hatchet if you wish.

When the Christian radio host accused him of plagiarism, the quick-witted preacher sounded flabbergasted — and annoyed. Behind the scenes, former church members said, Driscoll could be vicious, abusive and controlling. He drew pierced-and-tattooed congregants from Seattle to a church that espoused a conservative Calvinist doctrine cloaked in indie-rock, big screens and a worn pair of Chuck Taylors.
Mars Hill grew to 15 branches in five states with 13, visitors on Sundays. Driscoll appeared on Nightline, preached at Seahawks stadium, threw out the first pitch at a Mariners game, and founded a network of evangelical leaders who started hundreds of other churches.

But the person saying it also gets a lot of attention. Mars Hill is the third fastest-growing church in the country, according to Outreach magazine, and it thrives in proudly progressive Seattle. Seattle, after all, is a progressive city, which proudly claims native son Macklemore and Ryan Lewis –the same- the duo who recorded the marriage equality anthem “Same Love” and performed it during a mass wedding ceremony at the Grammys.
Somehow a city so proud of that also produced Mars Hill, where Driscoll, or “Pastor Mark” as his congregants call him, can occasionally sound like the pulpit’s version of a shock jock. That may not seem like Seattle but his church certainly looks like Seattle. Services resemble a concert; Christ-loving bands often sound and look like independent recording artists. The pews are filled with young people who warmly greet members while giving a friendly welcome to new attendees, and there’s a vibrant energy that fills the room.
The church intrigued musician Shaina Rae. And Pastor Mark, of course.

I use to walk there as a child just because it is so peaceful. However, it can be a little creepy at times but still a must see.
